Ukraine: Russia is planning attacks against critical infrastructure
The authorities in Ukraine have announced that the Kremlin will carry out several major data attacks against critical infrastructure in Ukraine and their nearby allies, such as Poland and the Baltic states. The attacks will probably be mostly focused on taking down or limiting the power grid.
The report also refers to several previous attacks Russia has carried out against Ukraine’s power grid. Among these, the attack in 2015 ensured that several residents had no electricity for up to six hours.
Researchers from Mandiant have mentioned that the “Sandworm” group, which has been behind previous attacks, is among the most advanced actors in the world and is controlled directly from the Kremlin. The group has made use of both well-known malware and malware that has been specially designed to attack the control systems of the power grid.
